          Geezer

Geezer was once owned by people who were evicted from their home. We don't know who moved the stuff left behind out of the house, but Geez was left and moved out to the curb in his cage with the trash. We have no idea how long he sat there until some caring person called animal control to get him. Animal Control ended up with him and we received Geez 14 days after.
Geezer came in a sick little boy. No teeth, ulcerations on the roof of his mouth, weighed 1# 8oz and had what sounded like the worse head cold you could imagine. We started a regiment of meds to help him breathe better. Doc G. looked at Geez the other day. Geezer has cancer of his nasal passages. This was also confirmed through Dr. Fear.
There really is nothing we can do for him. Keep him comfortable. We do have him on pred to see if it will hinder the progression of the cancer. This may very well be his last Christmas.

Trying to pick something that Geez will enjoy. Due to the lack of teeth he only eats AD mixed with Bobs gravy. He is so funny :-) Since he mouth breathes most of the time (due to the tumor) he swallows a lot of air. I hold him and he starts farting on me. I just laugh and cuddle him more.
Maybe he could use some Beano! Or false teeth!
He doesn't play when he is out. Just kind of walks around wondering what he is supposed to do. I think he has alzheimers (sp). Though he did go through a tube once. And I did see him nose a ball once. Maybe he would be interested in a stuffed "buddy" since he is alone.
As far as treats go he has not showed any interest in things like cheerios, raisins etc. he does like Nutrical.
Geezer is residing here with us. The few foster homes we have are full. Besides, who could give him better care than us? :-) We must be in denial. We still run the vaporizer with vicks for him, give him steam baths and put Ferretrx on his little nose, all to help him breathe easier.
          Does it work?
          No.
But I guess we feel like we are just not sitting back and doing nothing.

          More...[from Mary]...12/10/2000...
Geezer has his good days and his bad. On one of his good days (not too long ago) I caught him digging at the litter box! I was so happy. Normally, I would be telling the ferret to "stop it and behave" with Geez, I just watched in utter amazement and smiled. He was acting like a normal ferret.

He knows the sound of my voice and will stand up and look out of the cage when he hears it. He knows his name too.

I never told you that when animal control turned over Geezer to Cathy Sitek they also gave her the cage that he was in. Inside there was a very sad looking vinyl (?) type hammock and a litter box. The front of the litter box had been chewed away. There was also a hanging wooden ferret. I have one of them in my car hanging from the rear view mirror-the difference is the one I have has feet. The one in Geezers cage had them chewed off. Was this done out of anger, hunger or frustration? I guess we will never know.

Geezer is holding his own. He doesn't eat as much anymore. He sleeps an awful lot. I have seen him drinking water and that is a good thing. He is not dehydrated. The one thing I noticed today was that twice when I got him up he had (for lack of a better word) boogers coming out of the left side of his nose. Is this an improvement? Could this really be a head cold? Could the Drs. really be wrong? He also started sneezing. He doesn't sneeze "ah-choo" he kind of whinnies like a horse and his whole head shakes. Sounds so sad and funny at the same time.

This is the time for miracles. Maybe, just maybe, Geez will be that miracle.

          More Later,
          Mary

and arrival of Secret Santa Gifts

Kat, I came home from work today and walked in the house and the box [the gifts that I, Kat, had sent to him...] was sitting on the couch. Kris is home this week and he brought it in, but did not open it. I have been sitting here trying to think of the words to say Thank You. I just don't know what to say. Everything is just so beautiful!

I took Geezer out and we opened it together. I read him your card and it hangs on his cage. I plan on sending you a picture of Geez with his hammy and crocheted afghan.

I don't know why it took so long to get here. I know we have a ton of snow and did not receive mail for three days so that may have held up delivery.

Geezer won't eat for me anymore, Kat. :-( I wrote Troy Lynn looking for help in getting him to eat and maybe some other things I can do for him. He has a little scab on the end of his nose from me wiping it so often. I know he can't breathe and the goo just keeps coming out and caking up. He has also started to cling to me and his back legs and tail won't stop shaking.

I will give him kisses, hugs, tummy rubs and toe nibbles from you.

          Mary

          Christmas Update...[from Mary]...12/28/2000...

          Geezer with Christmas gifts

I have taken to syringe feeding Geezer. I know he wants to eat, he doesn't fight me, but when I give him the spoon to eat off of he won't. Maybe because his head faces down and causes his nose to plug up. He is still alert but his eyes seem to have lost some of the glitter that I saw in them a couple of weeks ago. He has also lost a little weight. I am hoping that he will start to gain some of the weight back.

I saved his afghan and hammy for Christmas Eve. I figured the colors were appropriate. You can't really see him in the pictures. He is the one that covers himself. He likes to sleep with his head up for a while and then he will switch and let it hang over the side. That is when his nose drains.
          :-(

I know you love him and he knows it too. I tell him all the time.

          Mary

          After Christmas Update...[from Mary]...12/29/2000...

Hope this puts a smile on your beautiful face. :-)

The other day, as I was feeding Geez, Kris asked me what I thought of the idea of making up wet food and putting it in Geezs' cage? I never had thought about it, but it seemed to make sense since we do it for kits with little or no real teeth. I told him I would start with a few pieces and see what happened. I couldn't really tell if the food was touched, but it kind of, sort of looked like it had been. I took out the bowl, got Geez and even though it was off a spoon-he ate it! Not a lot, but it was real kibble. I left the bowl in throughout the day. I still fed him his regular meals.
This morning I noticed that there is a hole in the food! He ate on his own! I can't begin to tell you how happy I am.

Maybe your afghan has curative powers! He can feel the love you put into every stitch.

          New Years Update...[from Mary]...1-7-2001...

          Geezer January 2001

There has been so much happening with Geez that I don't know where to begin.

I'll start with the vet update. His tumor has not gotten any bigger or smaller. He is breathing a lot better, even though he still has the runny nose.

I had a semi-sweet surprise one night. Geezer found a raisin and decided he LIKED it. It was very sad to see him try to eat it. I wonder if I soak it in water if it will be easier to chew?

He had the most fun running around the house. He tipped over my wastebasket, cleaned the dust bunnies from behind the tv and tormented the cat. He really had fun exploring the couch.

A lady by the name of Mary stopped by. She had read about Geezer on your web site. She fed Geez for me and he ate so well!! She said she was prepared to see a very sick acting ferret and was pleasantly surprised to see him running around actually acting like there was nothing wrong with him.

          Mary

          Geezer January 2001

          [From Kat...]

I want to thank Mary for sending me these updates on Geezer. I fell in love with Geezer the first time I saw his picture and read his story. And thanks to Mary, I have been able to feel close to him and feel he is a part of my life. I can not be with him in person, but through Mary, I can feel close...in spirit.

God Bless You, Mary and Kris. I love you both!

          Update...[from Mary]...2-3-2001...

Geezer has developed a fetish for the rag rug that sits in front of our main door. This in itself is ok, but some people that come over do not knock they just walk in. I find this a hazard to Geezer's health. Like you suggested, we moved the rug. He does not attempt to take it back to the door so it seems he just wants the dirty old rug. Silly old man :-)

On a sadder note, I see him slowing down. In everything. He doesn't explore as much as he used to. He gets out, goes to the kitchen, takes a drink and possibly a raisin and heads for the rug. Maybe he is just used to the place.

He doesn't eat as much as he used to, in fact, he hardly eats at all. Once in a while I get him to eat a goodly amount other than that he takes a few licks and turns his head. That is his way of saying he is done. I suppose I could start syringing him again, if I was assured he would not go through any stress.

His nose doesn't drain anymore and he is having a harder time of breathing. I believe that is hindering his eating habits. His sides concave when he inhales-real deep. He makes his shnurk sound when he does this. The steam baths don't seem to help his nose drain either.

He is showing signs of jerking through his body. His head does it the most. It doesn't seem to be insulinoma jerks though. He also has started to have diarrhea. No pretty colors but a nice odor (phew).

I know this sounds so dismal and sometimes I feel that the time has come, but when I see him gallop with a raisin in his mouth to that dirty old rug, I smile and thank God that he is still with us. We have been granted a lot more time than was ever allotted to us. Thanks to Aunt Kat and the Giving Tree, Geezer has known more love in the last three months than he may have ever known. For this we are forever grateful.

          Love,
          Mary

          Update...[from Kris]...2-15-2001...

Things have been a little hectic around here. We've been waiting for our vet to get back from Las Vegas so we can't give Dr. Williams the answer to his question (what type of cancer is it?).

Geezers tumor is growing into his throat, and its closing up slowly. We're going to try some of the meds Troy Lynn discussed in her e-mails.

          Update...[from Mary]...2-25-2001...

I know it has been a while since I did an update on Geez. I really don't know what to say. He is putting on weight and eating like a little piglet. He doesn't sneeze anymore when I feed him so the artwork on my wall is complete. :-). I started adding wet food to his gravy/ad mix. Have no idea why I didn't do it from the beginning. I found that the food we put in his cage just got hard and he wouldn't touch it, so that was a no go.

Kris is so set upon his having a biopsy done to find out what we are dealing with. The cancer diagnose was based on sight only. Both vets saw him and concluded that is what he had based on their observation of dogs and cats. They had both told us that it was a fast growing cancer and yet here it is four months later and Geez is still hanging out.

On March 18th, Geez will go in for surgery. On what, I am not sure. Maybe just a snippet for biopsy. I can't begin to tell you how I am feeling. Too many times (it seems) we have done what we "thought" was best only to lose the critter. I could not stand the pain if this were to happen. He is my buddy, my pal. He follows me to the kitchen when I ask him if he wants "nums". He sleeps in my arms when he has a full tummy. His Buddha Belly! Only God knows what is in store for my boy. It will be in His hands. If ever there was a time for prayer, that will be the day.

          Love,
          Mary

          Update...[from Mary]...3-1-2001...

I just had to tell you--Geezer dooked!!!!!

He has taken to aggravating the old crotchety cat when he is out. He does not want to hurt her, he just wants to play. Of course at sixteen she could care less about playing. Just feed her and let her be. Oh no, not the Geez. He runs after her dooking all the while. He is just so full of surprises!

          Update...[from Kris]...3-6-2001...

Hi Kat: I thought you would like to read this. It might put a smile on your face.

          love - Geezer & Kris

          From: Justine Hernandez

          Dear Kris and Mary,

I was just checking out your web-site and reading about Geezer.... he is such a special boy, you have done such a good job with him!

I went to Kris and Mary's to make gravy again on Friday night, I have to say we're getting pretty good at it. I love visiting their home/ shelter. Geezer was out when I got there and I had the opportunity to play with him, that little guy has come a long way thanks to the extensive efforts of Mary & Kris. Geez must have smelled my guys on me because he got really frisky when I started rubbing his neck. He was dookin' and giving me (love?) nibbles.....I could feel him "gumming" me since his teeth are barely there!

Watching Kris and Mary constantly giving care and attention to their sick fuzzies has truly helped my spirit. My baby has been sick on and off with adrenal disease, lately more on than off, and I don't know what I would do without their support.

          THANK YOU!!!!

          Love,
          Justine

          Update...[from Kris]...3-17-2001...

          Hi Kat:

Yes he is, [RE: Tunees having surgery on the 18th with Geezer] but we're trying to find out if its in his best interest or not. He's 5 lbs of fat with no muscle mass so we're not sure if he'll come out of anesthesia, but we'll take him non-the-less and make our decision there. God it sounds like its going to be a rough day tomorrow. Sooo many surgeries and chances we're going to take. Some days you try to think if your doing the right thing!! But God will make our final decision, and I know he'll be fair.

Sorry I'm rambling but I always get this way the day before surgeries. I go into tears and try to make rational decisions that will help these babies and find them a good and caring home.

Anyway - thanks for listening to me venting, and I will definitely Give Geezer and Tunees a kiss and a great BIG hug from you and tell them you Love them before I give them their anesthesia. They're going to have a lot of love backing them, I just hope that its enough!

God Bless to You & Yours
          Luv :
          Geezer, Tunees, Kris

          Hi Kat;

Geez is slowing down quite a bit. He has reverted back to sleeping and hardly eating at all. Where he used to eat a bowl he now eats half. He still eats heartily, but not as much. I can also feel congestion in his chest--a rattle. The old cat is still his joy in life. He grooms her ears and neck and she hisses and spits. He has stopped bringing Dad treats. In fact, he hardly ever saunters into the kitchen at all. We have put a nice clean comfy sack on the floor for him and he sleeps in it most of the time. He did go to the nasty old rug--to pee on it! Hahaha!!! What a character.

          Update...[from Mary]...5-24-2001...

          Hi Kat;

Geezer is doing as well as can be expected. If I don't wake him he doesn't eat. He just sleeps. His tongue is a little purple-due to lack of oxygen. Poor baby is finding it harder and harder to breathe. His playing with the kitty has stopped. He doesn't go into the kitchen for treats anymore either.

Cathy said that she can now notice the tumor. I don't really see it. Probably since I see him everyday. The sneezing has returned. His little horse like whinny. I'm still praying for an easy transition. The thought of losing him tears my heart into a thousand pieces. Every day I wake up and listen for the sounds of his breathing. I come home from work and listen.

I don't want the silence to be there.

          Mary

          Update...[from Mary]...6-15-2001...

Geezer has been pigging out on his food lately. Maybe it is because it is a new batch. The last one was a disaster. I looked in his mouth last night and noticed that the gum line, where we took the biopsy from, is turning black. Has me concerned.

          Update...[from Mary]...7-8-2001...

We took Geezer outside yesterday so he could play in the grass. He was so funny. He was trying to stand on his head. Don't ask me why-I couldn't tell you. He would put the top of his head on the grass and roll and rub it. He also wipes his mouth on the flat carpeted area of the scratching post. Cindy Lu doesn't try to stop him. She has been very nice to him. I think she knows he is older and is showing him the respect he deserves. I see her play with the other ferrets and she gets them in a head lock and stuff but they fight back with her. Geez isn't up to all that.

          Mary
