A pastel painting of a baby bird titled "Song of Spring" which is framed and under glass and must go that way... The frame is a 3 in wide brushed silver frame which compliments the subject well. Kind of ties in with hungry ferrets - hungry baby bird-- LOL

          UPDATE

          Date: Thu, 5 Jun 2008 09:23:40 -0600
          From: Travis Livieri
          Subject: Black-footed ferret update

          Friends and colleagues-

I have some news, if you haven't heard, about black-footed ferrets in Conata Basin, South Dakota, where I've worked on ferrets for the past 13 years. On May 15th sylvatic plague was confirmed in the prairie dogs of Conata Basin, home to one of the largest populations of black-footed ferrets in the world. Plague is a bacterial disease that is fatal to both ferrets and their primary prey, prairie dogs, and is the same disease that devastated human populations in the European Middle Ages. Plague can move quickly in the environment and we don't completely understand all aspects of the disease as it pertains to ferrets and prairie dogs.

At this point we know approximately 4,000 acres (of the 30,000 total acres) of prairie dogs have been affected, and it will likely spread further. Several federal agencies and organizations have begun the battle against plague. The federal agencies are focused upon killing fleas, a known vector of plague, by spraying dust into prairie dog burrows. I've begun vaccinating ferrets against plague with a vaccine we obtain from the army (because plague is a high bio-terrorism threat). It requires me to spotlight, capture and inject each ferret two times at least two weeks apart (i.e. an initial shot and then a booster). The combination of dusting and vaccine is very effective in halting plague, if it can be accomplished quick enough. We are in a race against time right now, not knowing where and how fast plague will spread before we can get there with vaccine and dust. Both efforts will persist throughout the summer and into fall. Recently we've received quite a bit of rainfall in South Dakota making it nearly impossible to accomplish field work. Even a little bit of rain turns the soil into gumbo and you're instantly stuck. I've spent five nights so far slogging around in the mud to capture and vaccinate ferrets. Moist, humid conditions can also promote the flea population and further the spread of plague.

Plague is not a stranger to black-footed ferret recovery but it is new to Conata Basin. Many folks have been fighting the battle against plague for years and now it is our turn. As the conditions dry out I will continue to vaccinate ferrets and crews will begin the dusting effort. I am confident that we will preserve a viable population of black-footed ferrets in Conata Basin. I also feel very fortunate that this battle is a biological one and not political (e.g. when politicians want to poison prairie dogs) because the remedy is apparent. We need to vaccinate ferrets and dust prairie dog burrows NOW. I need your support NOW. The battle against plague will be ongoing but the first steps (i.e. vaccinating and dusting) are the largest. You can help by "adopting" a black-footed ferret online, it takes less than 10 minutes, and those funds go directly to the field in Conata Basin for vaccinating ferrets. Go to http://www.prairiewildlife.org/ and sponsor a black-footed ferret NOW and tell your friends and family to do the same. It's the easiest and most effective thing you can do for black-footed ferrets.

I thank you for all of the help and support you've given. I will try to keep you updated on the latest and make sure to post it on our website.

          Thank you so much,

          From: Travis Livieri
Subject: Black-footed ferrets in South Dakota

Last week the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirmed the presence of sylvatic plague in Conata Basin, South Dakota, home to one of the largest black-footed ferret populations in the world. Plague is a bacterial disease that kills both black-footed ferrets and their prey, prairie dogs. It is mostly transmitted by fleas and can decimate a population in a short time. In 2007 I documented 291 individual black-footed ferrets in Conata Basin and now this population faces a tremendous threat. I have been working with the Conata Basin black-footed ferret population since the beginning (1996) and will spend the upcoming weeks/months in the field in South Dakota fighting the disease. I will be working closely with several government agencies to kill fleas to reduce the spread of plague (via dusting prairie dog burrows) and possibly vaccinating black-footed ferrets. I will be posting more information on the FML on Friday as the situation continues to develop (we will also provide information on our website www.prairiewildlife.org ) and give suggestions for those who want to help. I thank you for all of your support and know that black-footed ferrets will be in your thoughts and wishes. Together we will fight against plague and we will continue to have a thriving black-footed ferret population in Conata Basin, South Dakota.

          Sincerely,
          Travis Livieri

          About Renee Downs
          May 10. 2008

posted to the FML by: Lisa Oestereich
          used with permission.

For those of you who do not know, Renee Downs was in a terrible car accident last night in North Carolina. She was taken by ambulance to the hospital but was released this morning. She is bruised and cut but is okay. Her car is totaled.

I just got off the phone with Renee (Friday afternoon). Her mother and sister are now with her and they are off to get some Totally Ferret for furkids, who do not like the vet clinic cat food.

Here's what happened with Renee's accident. She was driving in the slow lane with a vehicle in front of her. That vehicle suddenly jumped into the left hand land and Renee then saw a car (I don't know if it was totally stopped or just going very, very slow) right in front of her and she had to veer off to the right to avoid plowing into the rear of that vehicle. Her tire hit something as she veered off and her car rolled. As her car rolled, all of her windows blew out and Gandalf and his entire cage went out a window. The cage was decimated. And Gandalf died (her DMK boy). EMTs and firemen from the Big Marsh Volunteer Fire Dept, Station 2 and a tow truck (the tow truck driver is also a fire department volunteer) responded immediately. The tow truck driver worked tirelessly to find all the ferrets and little Gandalf's body -- funny thing is Renee had two frozen ferrets with her that she was bringing home to bury and he found those for her too so you can imagine how confused he was. He has all three bodies in his freezer on hold for Renee. The EMTs brought the ferrets in the ambulance with Renee to the hospital (which they are not supposed to do, but they did it anyway). The vet came TO THE HOSPITAL AT NIGHT, to pick up Renee's ferrets and bring them back to the clinic for treatment. A Robeson County Animal Cruelty Investigator (they do not have an animal control officer in Robeson County) stayed with the ferrets in the emergency room while Renee was being treated (she was going to transport them to the vet for Renee, but the vet came right to the hospital himself). And last, but certainly not least, Diane Campbell, who drove three hours to get to Renee to help and be with her in her time of need. Thats a lot of small town hospitality for a stranger that’s just passing through.

Many people have been wondering what they can do for Renee. Well, Renee doesn't need anything right now shes all taken care of. But she wanted to relay the story of so many people (total strangers) that helped her get through this terrible ordeal. Renee would be grateful if folks could send thank you notes, letters of commendation or donations to the Big Marsh Volunteer Fire Department, Station 2, the EMTs or Diane Campbella's shelter building fund. The EMS department told me they don't release the names of the EMTs but in this case he would since they do not get thank yous very often and that they would really appreciate it.

          TOW TRUCK DRIVER
Richard Durden of Richard's Towing in ST. Pauls, NC tow truck driver that worked tirelessly to find Gandalf and the other two ferrets for Renee. He says that whatever he gets from her insurance company for towing her vehicle he will donate to the Big Marsh Volunteer Fire Department.

So drop a card of thanks in the mail to these folks, pick up the phone and give them a call or send them cookies or something nice to brighten their day. A donation to the fire department would be nice since they're all volunteer (Renee says shes donating an oxygen mask for cats to them) or send them a gift certificate for a local pizza joint (Zachary's Pizza and Restaurant, 202 East Broad Street, Saint Pauls, NC 28384, 910-865-3531 believe it or not there is NO DOMINOS in St. Pauls), or donate to Diane Campbell's new shelter fund. Take a moment to tell these people that we THANK THEM and how appreciative we all are for them taking such good care of Renee AND the ferrets.

P.S. I called Richard Durden (since he is also a fireman) and asked if the guys would actually eat cookies and the like if people sent them. He said heck ya!

          The Disposable Ferret

          Vickie McKimmey

Ferrets require a good deal of commitment and responsibility. Many people do not realize the care and commitment a ferret requires until it is too late. They think they can simply let it loose once they tire of it, or they think an animal shelter can provide it a home.

Our disposable society has created a new commodity: the disposable ferret. Over the years the homeless ferret population has skyrocketed due to the following reasons: lack of commitment on the part of the pet owner, the belief that ferrets are disposable, the misconception that ferret shelters can take care of all unwanted ferrets and overstocking pet stores with baby ferrets for the uneducated pet buyer for the ease of an impulse purchase.

People may buy a ferret for several reasons: They want company, they want a cute baby ferret kit, it would be nice for the children, or they get a ferret as a present. The novelty of a ferret quickly wears off once the owner realizes the ferret requires commitment - food, water, shots, time, medical care, and attention.

Once an owner doesn't want the ferret they may think they can simply let it loose. Ferrets left in the street to fend for themselves have a life expectancy of less than a week. They will die of starvation, overexposure, be killed by another animal or get hit by a car. Ferrets are domestic animals; they are used to being taken care of and their survival instincts are poor. On their own, they are not able to survive.

The truth is that for every twenty ferrets in need of a home, there is only one person willing to adopt. The rest will be sent to animal shelters and will ultimately be destroyed. Because of the overcrowding at local animal shelters and because most have no clue how to care properly for a ferret, ferrets that are brought in are usually destroyed. This has lead to home based ferret shelters.

The biggest problem with home based ferret shelters is that the shelter moms and dads are human. They all at one time or another get sick, tired (or sick and tired), burned out, or have families issues to deal with. Sometimes it's just getting older. In reality they are all only one illness, family crisis or accident away from becoming a headline.

How many ferrets does your local ferret shelter have? How many dead ones are in their freezer waiting for the spring thaw to be buried or to have enough to take a bulk amount to the local crematorium? How many shelters are run by just one person? What happens if that person is in an accident on the way home or breaks a leg or gets cancer?

Replace the word shelter above for ferretry and shelter operator to ferret breeder. Replace shelter with ferret owner with many ferrets. How close are you to becoming a headline???

Ferret owners, breeders and shelter operators need to keep in touch with each other. Everyone needs to have a plan and that plan needs to be kept up to date. Planning for the unexpected will help to keep you from becoming the next headline.

          Ferret in the Flowers

I am just SO excited about this "Ferret in the Flowers" print [of an original Painting by Alicia Drakiotes.] that I got!!!! She sells the prints at her E-bay Store. It comes unframed or matted...but all I did was go to Hobby Lobby and get the matte [$1.95] and they had their open wood frames on sale for 1/2 price!!!...so the frame and matte cost me less than $12.00!!!!
So for a great price, you could have a beautiful framed and matted Ferret painting [print] of Alicia's...and my!!...is she talented!!!!
Just click either the picture or where it says E-bay Store to get one of your own!!!...OR...give it as a gift!!!!..."Ferret in the Flowers" is not the only print she has...there is also "Sable Ferret".

I really AM excited about my picture...Art is a passion of mine..and this is just wonderful!

          ***
The wonderful delightful "Ferret in the Flowers", Mr Shadow, quick as you please, a ton of love & energy is afflicted with lymphoma and it has attacked the kidneys. We did not realize the cause initially of his renal failure, sadly as he exhibited pain we looked to uncover the cause.
Much as his brother, Mickey Moose, left this earth-- this is the battle my Shadow and I are fighting. We will end this battle at 3 PM Monday, March 14th, 2005, so those who are able to light a candle for his passage over the bridge, I will be ever grateful.

Shadow's face graces the print which is on ebay and has been supporting the shelter here-- we have only a limited number on hand -- and I have decided that we will not print more. now is your time to collect the fanciful DEW face!

In the future .. I will just have to find another wonderful child in the future to paint - but for now I will grieve.
Thanks for understanding, I am sure that I will write a trbute but now it's time to cuddle.

          Alicia
